This book is one of the most educational and informational book I have ever seen on the subject of Cartridge boxes from the Civil war

This book fills a huge gap in the literature about the Russian Civil War. The Siberian theatre hasn't been the subject of a monograph since the 1930s, and only Canfield Smith's wonderful book on the events in Vladivostok during 1920-1922 gave the reader an in-depth look at a part of the complicated sequence of events east of the Ural mountains. Dr.Smele's book is the first in-depth treatment in any language of Kolchak's government, how it came to be, why it performed so poorly in all its tasks as it did, and what became of it. The political intrigue, the rather inept leadership of Kolchak himself, the tragically inept military efforts - after reading this book the reader may wonder how Kolchak managed to do as well as he did (at first). I have found this book to be an indispensable reference work. In addition, it is beautifully written - perhaps not an important consideration for a scholarly work, but definitely a feature that makes reading this book a pleasure. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in Siberia and/or the Russian Civil War.

This concise and lucidly written book deals with a series of key events in 1918-23 which conditioned the rise of modern Turkey and decided the fate of the Cauacsus. By using new data Gokay subjects them to a new and well-integrated analysis that provides a clearer perspective about the policies of all the forces involved in the struggle for the Caucasus and Anatolia. Convincingly an coherently, he demonstrates how the Bolshevik ideology endangered new strategic realignments and turned Russia and Great Britain into enemies. Gokay uses pactically all the existing literature in Turkish and Western languages and a variety of primary sources. In fact, he is one of the first scholars to make use of the Russian sources and thus bring forth new information on Russo-Turkish relations, including the activities of Enver Pasha, one of the Young Turks' leaders. The result is a balanced, objective, informative, and truly scholarly first-rate work - in fact, the best available succinct study of the subject.

The collection of excellent and delicious recipes from the heart fo the Rus is very well presented. I have owned this book for a few years now, and literally worn it out! It covers not only the food preparation but ethnicity and socio-cultural views of the people who prepare and eat this food as part of their cultural environment. A well written book and a easy guide to use.

Good writing but not Trixie Belden

During the second world war, the communists did set a very large spy ring operating against the Nazis which the head of the Gestapo Heydrich gave the name of Red Orchestra.

The French group of Trepper got liquidated between the autumn 1941 and August 1942, the Belgium group of Victor "Kent" Sukulov in December 1941 and the "Bordo" group in July/August 1942. The "Hilda" Dutch ring fell in August 1942, and the German ring of Harro Schulze-Boysen 'Choro" was exterminated at about the same period and just before the "Arwid" group of Arvid Harnak. The Swiss Dora group of Sandor Rado, ALexander Foote, and Rudof Roessler was stopped for some time as from 1943 by Masson the head of Swiss Intelligencce Service.

Nowadays the incredible history of the Red Orchestra, which surpasses fiction, is twisted by politics (communists, ex-nazis, democrats...), by nationalistic aspects (Russians, French, Swiss, Belgians, Germans) and by the Allied victors. There are accounts by surviving actors (Trepper, Rado, Roeder, Foote, Puenter, Sudoplatov...) There are however, to this day, only three serious purely historical relations: the CIA report, V. E. Tarrant's book and Heinz Hoehne's account. The German historian has supplied the most accurate and exhaustive account on this incredible spy ring.

Pierre Accoce and Pierre Quet's book made romantic assumptions which were demonstrated ot be false and the author had to admit their fabrications. K. Bienal and L. Krausher focused on the German branch of the spy ring. Louis Kilzer's work is fascinating but it makes an assumption it doesn't succeed sustaining. Gilles Perrault is too focused on the Franco-Belgium part of the Orchestra. Anthony Read and David Fisher are trying to recuperate the Red Orchestra for Ultra which for some British writers was the second world war "deus ex machina". Some other interesting books are written in German or in French and are not translated.

Heinz HOEHNE'S book is the most accurate of the books on the Red Orchestra. Read it first, and then read some books by the actors: first Leopold Treper, then Sandor Rado, then Alexander Foote and then Otto Puenter.

After that, if you still have question, you can go for details in the CIA and Tarrant books. We are taught that this the network illustrates a great victory for the allies, but reading through these books tend to show that it was a drama for us and a great victory for Walter Schellenberg's Nazi counter-espionage, and Heinrich Mueller's Gestapo boutchers.

With Kilzer and Perrault's books, this is the most pleasant book to read on the subject. Don't miss it.

Heller has written definitive book on what the Soviet regime was all about - an attempt to create a new human being. It goes into great detail of how the Soviet government attempted to reshape the human mind and society, with obvious disasterous results. It is a must read for students of Cold War history, and for anybody wanting to understand what the Soviet Union was all about. Reading this book confirms the fact the the Soviet Union was The Evil Empire.

This book is brilliant in every respect: the writing is crystal clear, even elegant and the analysis is sharp. The conclusions are wise and have stood the test of time. Unreservedly recommended for anyone seeking to understand the roots of the cold war and the role of alliance politics in bringing it to an end.

Whitcomb reminds us, once again, that our foreign policy has not always been consistent with ourdemocratic ideals.

Read this book to get an important view on the history of the United States. You may not always agree, but it is a thoughtful
work.
